Mass Flow Meter Types

Mass flow meters can be divided into two categories:
One is the direct type, which directly outputs the mass flow. Coriolis mass flow meters and thermal gas mass flow meters are direct mass flow meters.

The other type is indirect or deduced. By using the relationship between fluid density, temperature and pressure, the flow meter that calculates the fluid mass is an indirect mass flow meter. Such as application of ultrasonic flowmeter and density meter combination. Multiply their output to get the mass flow rate.


There are many types of direct mass flow meters, such as calorimetric, angular momentum, gyro and double impeller. This kind of instrument is suitable for measuring small flow gas, the disadvantage is that it is inert. The measured value is related to the specific heat of the gas at a constant pressure. The measuring element is in contact with the medium and is easy to be contaminated and corroded.

There are 3 main types of indirect mass flow meters:
Combination of velocity flow meter and density meter.
Combination of throttling (or target) flowmeter and positive displacement flowmeter.
Combination of throttling (or target) flowmeter and density meter.

There is also a method that converts the measured value of a volumetric flowmeter into a volumetric flow rate in a standard state according to the working pressure and temperature of the fluid.
However, when the type or composition of the medium changes, it cannot give an accurate mass flow. Strictly speaking, it is not a mass flow meter. Output density, specific gravity, volume flow, mass flow, mass energy flow, etc. It has multiple functions such as indication, analog output, printing, over-limit alarm, and instrument failure alarm.


The basic principle of thermal mass flowmeter is to use an external heat source to heat the measured fluid in the pipeline. Heat energy flows with the fluid. The mass flow rate of the fluid is reflected by measuring the change in heat (temperature) caused by the fluid flow.

Differential pressure

The differential pressure mass flowmeter is a flowmeter based on the Magnus effect. In practical applications, the mass flow measurement is realized by the combination of orifice plate and quantitative pump. There are two common structures: double-hole plate and four-hole plate combined with quantitative pump.


Coriolis mass flowmeter (Coriolis flowmeter for short) is an instrument that directly measures mass flow by using the principle that fluid flows in a vibrating tube to produce Coriolis force proportional to mass flow.

The structure of Coriolis flowmeter has many forms, generally composed of vibrating tube and converter. The vibrating tube (measurement pipe) is a sensitive device. There are several shapes such as U shape, Ω shape, ring shape, straight tube shape and spiral shape. There are also methods such as double pipes, but the basic principle is the same.
