Working Principle of Melt Pressure Transducer

The working principle of the melt pressure sensor is that the pressure of the medium directly acts on the diaphragm of the sensor. The diaphragm produces a micro-displacement proportional to the pressure of the medium. The resistance of the sensor changes. The change is detected by electronic circuits. The conversion outputs a standard signal corresponding to this pressure.

Precautions for buying high temperature melt pressure sensors

1. What kind of pressure is being measured. Generally, the maximum pressure range of the high temperature melt pressure sensor you need should reach 1.5 times the maximum pressure value of your system. All high temperature melt pressure sensors are designed to withstand the maximum pressure for 200 million cycles without degrading performance. You need to find a compromise solution between system performance and high temperature melt pressure sensor life.

2. Consider the type of media that needs to be measured. The key factor to consider when selecting a high temperature melt pressure sensor is the medium being measured. Will it be a viscous liquid or a slurry on the pressure head? Is the contact with the high temperature melt pressure sensor a soluble or corrosive medium or clean dry air? This question determines whether impact dies are needed and what materials are used to make contact with the media.

Installation

The correct installation position of the high temperature melt transmitter on the process pipeline is related to the measured medium. In order to obtain the best measurement results, pay attention to several points:

  1. Prevent the transmitter from coming into contact with corrosive or hot media;
  2. When measuring liquid pressure, the pressure taking port should be opened on the side of the process pipeline to avoid sedimentation;
  3. Prevent dross from depositing in the duct;
  4. When measuring the gas pressure, the pressure taking port should be opened at the top of the process pipeline, and the transmitter should also be installed at the top of the process pipeline so that the accumulated liquid can be easily injected into the process pipeline;
  5. When measuring steam or other high-temperature media, a condenser such as a buffer tube (coil) must be connected, and the operating temperature of the transmitter should not exceed the limit;
  6. The pressure guiding tube should be installed in a place with small temperature fluctuations;
  7. When freezing occurs in winter, it is necessary to take anti-freezing measures according to the transmitter installed outdoors to avoid the expansion of the liquid in the pressure port due to the freezing volume, leading to damage to the sensor;
  8. When wiring, pass the cable through the waterproof joint or flexible pipe and tighten the sealing nut to prevent rainwater, etc. from leaking into the transmitter housing through the cable;
  9. When measuring the liquid pressure, the installation position of the transmitter should avoid the impact of the liquid to avoid damage to the sensor due to overpressure.

Maintenance

High temperature melt transmitters are required to be checked once a week. Check every month. It is mainly to remove dust from the instrument. Carefully inspect electrical components. Always check the output current value. There is weak current inside the pressure transmitter. Be sure to keep it away from strong external electricity.

In plastic and rubber extrusion production lines, melt pressure sensors play an important role in improving melt quality, improving production safety and protecting production equipment. When a sensor upstream of the filter sounds an alarm, it indicates that the pressure inside the extruder is too high, possibly causing excessive wear on the screw.
For manufacturers applying melt pumps, it is necessary to measure the inlet and outlet pressures of the melt medium. To ensure that the melt medium can continuously flow into the mold. Because of any obstruction, the melt pump may be blocked.

A pressure sensor equipped on an extrusion line can measure the pressure at only one point, or it can be a series of sensors used to measure the entire line.
Melt pressure sensor is connected with data recorder and sound alarm device. The processing parameters of the extruder can be adjusted using the processing control system.

Common faults of high temperature melt pressure sensor digital instruments

  1. High temperature melt pressure gauge with black screen. Make a preliminary judgment as to whether the 220v power supply line is faulty. The pressure gauge may burn out.
  2. Word skip appears on the pressure gauge. Preliminarily judge whether the connection of the signal line between the sensor and the pressure instrument is bad; whether the shield line is connected to the ground. There are interference signals at the scene. (Poor contact between the welding points inside the meter).
  3. The upper window of the meter displays —- or 0000. The signal cable between the sensor and the meter may be connected incorrectly. Or the sensor leads are broken.
  4. The pressure display on the upper window of the meter does not rise but decreases, which may be the damage of the sensor diaphragm.
  5. The pressure gauge functions normally, that is, the pressure cannot reach the target value. Check the sensor threads. Installing too shallow or too deep may cause it. Adjusting the torque to the normal range pressure shows normal;
  6. The high temperature melt pressure gauge shows a negative number. Cannot clear calibration. The high-temperature melt pressure gauge is subjected to an instantaneous strong current shock, which causes damage to the instrument protection components.

Melt pressure transducers are common spares on extrusion lines to measure the pressure and/or temperature of materials in pipes. The design structure of the product is to stick the four strain gauges that make up the bridge circuit on the diaphragm at the other end of the capillary tube according to the principle of circular diaphragm compression.
During measurement, the melt presses the pressure-sensitive diaphragm, which transmits the pressure to the diaphragm at the other end through the filling medium. The diaphragm is deformed, and the strain is attached to the strain gauge.

Before the calibration operation, first, the Melt pressure transducers are stopped, second, the operating temperature is within the operating temperature, and third, the temperature compensation is adjusted to zero.

Melt pressure transducers are available in temperature compensated grades, which are selected based on the medium filled in the capillary tube in the sensor. The physical properties of the filling medium are directly related to the zero degree output level.

When assigning ranges with the meter, this value needs to be taken into account and adjustments made to compensate. A calibration adjustment acts like setting a balance, think of temperature compensation as the packaging of the item being weighed.

The temperature compensation for 3 different media is as follows:

  • Hg (mercury) = 15 psi/ 100°F or 27 psi/ 100°C
  • Oil = 36 psi/100°F or 65psi/100°C
  • NaK (Sodium Potassium) = 30 psi/ 100°F or 54psi/ 100°C

Example:
Process temperature = 200°C, mercury filled, signal output 60psi @ zero pressure

① According to the full scale pressure range of the sensor, this offset is outside the normal combined error specification. The pressure range is 10,000 psi, the combined error is 0.5%, and the compensation is actually 110 psi.
② Remember that when we perform calibration, there is no change to the signal output, only to ensure that the output is within the tolerance range of the specification.
③The design of the meter is easy to process calibration, and it only takes a few cases to test the high/low limit range of the output.

A pressure transmitter refers to a pressure sensor whose output is a standard signal, and is an instrument that accepts a pressure variable proportionally converted into a standard output signal. It can convert physical pressure parameters such as gas and liquid sensed by the load cell sensor into standard electrical signals. Measurement, indication and process adjustment are carried out by supplying secondary instruments such as indicating alarms, recorders and regulators.

If you want the pressure transmitter to be washable, you should consider installing the pressure transmitter on the barrel before the filter or before and after the melt pump or in the mold.

Points to note when cleaning the pressure transmitter:

All pressure transmitter connections should be removed before cleaning the body with a wire brush or detergent. Because these two cleaning methods may damage the diaphragm of the pressure transmitter and the insulation of the wiring.

When heated cleaning is required, the pressure transmitter should also be removed and the top wiped with a soft, non-abrasive cloth. At the same time, the holes of the pressure transmitter also need to be cleaned with soft tools.
