Common industrial refrigerants
Using water as a refrigerant is a low-cost solution that is completely non-toxic, easily available and environmentally friendly.
- R134A Hydrofluorocarbon
This is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) and haloalkane refrigerant, commonly known as halothane or Freon 134A. As a refrigerant, it has completely stable thermal characteristics, low toxicity, non-corrosiveness and non-flammability. It is widely used in automobile air-conditioning units and industrial chillers.
- R744 carbon dioxide
The use of carbon dioxide as a refrigerant is advantageous because it is non-flammable and non-toxic.
- R717 ammonia
Ammonia (R717) is a refrigerant and is a halogen-free chemical. This is the most commonly used refrigerant in chillers. It has the highest heat absorption rating, which makes it ideal for use in small portable chillers without the need for large cooling equipment.
This is a group of refrigerants composed of HCFC compounds. They have a high GWP and are very toxic. Examples of refrigerator refrigerant types in this group include R2, R123, R124, and R151.
Hydrocarbons are another refrigerant used in domestic and industrial refrigeration. Common refrigerant hydrocarbons are R600A (isobutylene) and R290 (propane).
These refrigerant types are highly flammable and therefore require careful special installation. As we all know, propane has no potential for ozone depletion, so it is suitable for environmentally friendly industrial chillers.
7. 407C Rand
The combination of hydrofluorocarbon difluoromethane (R32), pentafluoroethane (R125) and 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (R134A) will respectively provide heat, reduce flammability and reduce pressure. This refrigerant is considered to be the most suitable substitute for the R-22 refrigerant system, which will be phased out in 2020.
If the cooling process requires medium and low temperature refrigerants, R404A should be considered. This is a mixture of hydrocarbons that can be used in various commercial environments, such as supermarkets and cold storage rooms.
9. R410A type
For general air conditioners, R410A is an azeotropic mixture of hydrofluorocarbons that can be used. It has no harmful effect on the ozone layer. With the phasing out of R22 refrigerant, it has become more and more popular.
- R448A type
This is a non-flammable HFC mixture used to replace R22 and R404A in domestic and commercial refrigeration systems. It is toxic and requires careful handling, installation and storage.
- R449A type
R449A is another HFC mixture with similar composition to R448A. It is used as a substitute for R404A and R507A refrigerants in medium and low temperature applications.
One of the main advantages of R449A is that it can be easily retrofitted in old refrigeration systems or installed in newer models. Another advantage is its environmental friendliness and low GWP.
Liquid Refrigerant Flow Meter
