These can be inserted through ball valves, making removal for service or calibration very simple. This method does not need perfectly dry and pure gases to be accurate,and is very tolerant of wet gases and contaminants which makes it ideal for measuring in difficult places. Thermal mass meters and calorimetric flow sensors sense the cooling effect on a heated element,which is directly proportional to the mass flow rate rather than the volumetric flow rate. This removes the subsequent calculations needed to determine mass flow rate,using other methods of flow measurement, and there is no pressure or temperature compensation necessary.The actual sensing tips are small and thus the restriction placed,in the pipe produces very little back pressure, making this method ideal for very low and very high flow rates.Thermal mass meters are available in a range of accuracies and are ideal for dry, clean gas flow measurement. Some designs have all stainless steel wetted parts making them better suited to contaminated or corrosive gases,which would damage the exposed sensing elements of unprotected designs. They are not suitable for wet gases or steam. For those applications a pitot tube design or possibly a vortex meter would be the better choice. Thermal mass is also an excellent principle for use in flow switches,as there are no moving parts in the media and the sensor produces very little back pressure due to its minimal size. These flow switches are very sensitive and some models can be used to determine flow direction as well as flow/no flow.

Featured Nitrogen Gas Flowmeter

There are 4 types of flow meters commonly used to measure the mass flow of nitrogen:

Thermal gas mass flow meter. Directly measure the mass flow of common gases, including nitrogen.

Coriolis mass flowmeter. Directly measure the mass flow of gas and liquid. It can be used to measure nitrogen, which is more expensive.

The vortex flowmeter directly measures the volume flow of gas and liquid. It is necessary to add temperature and pressure measuring sensors and totalizers to calculate the mass flow.

Cryogenic Liquid Nitrogen Flowmeters

Case: Vortex flowmeter used for nitrogen gas flow measurement

The vortex flowmeter works according to the Karman vortex principle. Each pulse or certain current signal output by the meter represents a certain volume of the measured medium. The total number of pulses output during a period of time or the integral of the analog current quantity will represent the sum of the flow of the medium flowing in this period. That is, the instantaneous flow and cumulative flow we often say.

The vortex flowmeter measures a wide range of media, and it can measure gas, liquid and steam. It has a high working temperature and can withstand 350 degrees high temperature. Ultrasonic flowmeters use sound waves to determine the velocity of a fluid flowing in a pipe.

At no flow conditions, the frequencies of an ultrasonic wave transmitted into a pipe, and its reflections from the fluid are the same.

Under flowing conditions, the frequency of the reflected wave is different, due to the Doppler effect.

When the fluid moves faster, the frequency shift increases linearly.

The transmitter processes signals from the transmitted wave, and its reflections to determine the flow rate.

Ultrasonic flow meter advantages and disadvantages

Generally, an ultrasonic flow meter is the device, that uses ultrasound to measure the velocity of liquid flow, that helps in determining the volume of liquid flow also.

What is ultrasonic gas meter?

Ultrasonic flowmeters use sound waves to determine the velocity of a fluid flowing in a pipe.

Transit time ultrasonic flowmeters send and receive ultrasonic waves,

between transducers in both the upstream and downstream directions in the pipe.

At no flow conditions,

it takes the same time to travel upstream and downstream between the transducers.

Under flowing conditions, the upstream wave will travel slower and take more time than the (faster) downstream wave.

When the fluid moves faster, the difference between the upstream and downstream times increases.

The transmitter processes upstream and downstream times to determine the flow rate.

They represent about 12% of all flowmeters sold.

How does a clamp-on flow meter work?

A clamp-on ultrasonic gas flow meter produces signals,

that is five to ten times more powerful,

then those of traditional ultrasonic transducers.

The new clamp-on transducers produce clean, coded signals with very minimal background noise.

Orifice meter vs Venturi meter

The orifice flow meter is a flowmeter with a variable cross-sectional pressure difference.
